In order to backup to iCloud, go to settings, click on iCloud and press “Backup”.  In all it took me about an hour to back up my device, so make sure your device is plugged in to a power source to prevent the backup being interrupted.

Once you are convinced then click on “Download and Install.” Again, make sure that your device is plugged into the mains so that you don’t run out of juice in the middle of the upgrade process – but don’t worry Apple will prompt you about this before the download starts.  You’ll also have to acknowledge the terms and conditions associated with the download.

Once the download process starts, it will take about an hour on a regular broadband connection.

After the download the device will restart automatically and will take a few more minutes to configure itself.

Final Steps After Downloading iOS 6

The last few steps will involve a few prompts by Apple.  Firstly you’ll need to decide if you want to enable location services.  The next step is to enter you Apple ID password in order to set up iCloud, iMessage and Facetime.  Lastly you have the option to register your device to your Apple ID, which according to Apple will enable you to “stay up to date on product information and get faster access to support.”  Sounds good!
