About MAKE APP Magazine
MAKE APP Magazine is devoted to teaching indie app developers how to best market and monetize their apps in order to achieve success in the App Store. The magazine, launching August 2012, is edited and produced by David Janner, a former medical doctor who abandoned his medical training to pursue his passion for entrepreneurship and technological innovation. MAKE APP Magazine was born out of David’s interest in app development and the relative lack of credible information sources related to app development and app marketing for independent developers.
MAKE APP Magazine is also one of the first of its kind, being a digital magazine published exclusively to the iPad Newsstand by an independent publisher. The Apple iPad Newsstand is a relatively new feature launched in October 2011 which facilitates the delivery of digital magazines straight to the convenience of the iPad. MAKE APP Magazine takes advantage of the Magcast platform, which allows independent publishers to easily publish to the iPad Newsstand.
The Modern Quandary For Today’s App Developer
There is no doubt that mobile and mobile apps are the future. However in today’s environment it is becoming increasingly difficult for app developers to get their apps found. And it’s even harder to generate an income from app development.
According to Venturebeat, in 2015 revenues generated from the app industry will exceed 36 billion USD. In order for app developers to get a piece of this lucrative pie they are going to need to become increasingly savvy vis-à-vis their app marketing efforts. As of today, August 2012, there are more than 700,000 apps available for download in the Apple App Store alone. Each day thousands of new apps are submitted to Apple.
The situation is bleak for uninitiated app developers. According to a survey undertaken by App Promo, 59% of developers don’t break even on their apps and 68% reported that their most successful app earned less than $5,000.
However, despite this backdrop, there are app developers who are consistently able to generate profitable apps. Some of these developers manage to generate respectable passive income streams (such as Carter Thomas who at the time of interview was generating an income of $6,000 per month from his apps), all the way to app developers who have sold their app businesses for millions of dollars (such as Amish Shah, featured guest in issue #1 who sold his app business for $1.95 million after starting from scratch 9 months prior).

MAKE APP Magazine’s Mission
The mission of MAKE APP Magazine is to create successful independent app developers by interviewing and breaking down the tactics that made leading app entrepreneurs “win” the app game.
David Janner – Founder
David Janner founded MAKE APP Magazine in August 2012. In a previous life David was a medical doctor, having trained through Melbourne University and St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne.
In 2010 David had a profound epiphany and decided to leave the medical profession to pursue the entrepreneurial bug that had taken hold of him. After a 1 month vacation in Thailand, spent holed up in a beautiful sea-side hut devouring business books, David began his entrepreneurial career initially spread out over several different endeavours. Teaching himself the basics of search engine optimization and lead generation, David managed to generate repeated success by optimizing websites to rank #1 in Google.
David’s current passion is app development. Besides his primary focus of editing and publishing MAKE APP Magazine, he is in the process of developing several apps for the Apple App Store.
